PERSONAL STATEMENT Directions: Answer these three Personal Statement questions, writing at least 5-10 descriptive sentences for each question. Be sure to do the Pre-Writing Techniques before you write so that your writing shows lots of specific details and description. Try to tell a story! Keep me interested, and avoid clichés.
1. Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. When I was a child my parents visited my grandfather every Sunday, he taught me how to fix many things. For example, when the washing machine did not work my grandmother said out loud "the machine does not work again" and suddenly he appeared with a bag with many tools to fix it. After a few years, my father did the same things in my house, always fixed the door, the faucet or the closet; my father had a big bag with many tools inside! I called this bag “the magic bag” Now, I think that all these little things helped me to be a resourceful person and look my future with responsibility and determination, I am sure that my dreams and my goals were shaped by my family and good friends who have been and will be with me.
2. What inspired your goal? When did you become interested in this goal? Tell us about one experience or one person that/who has shaped you and inspired your dream. Tell us a story One of my goals was to study an engineering program, but I did not know what engineering program should study. It was when my brother encouraged me to study mechanical engineering, he said: "Remember when you spent all day with my grandfather fixing things, You Loved it" I understood that mechanical engineering will be my passion and my motivation. 3. What's special, unique, distinctive, and/or impressive about you or your life story? What details of your life (personal or family problems, history, people or events that have shaped you or influenced your goals)? Have you had to overcome any unusual obstacles or hardships (for example, economic, familial, or physical) in your life? When I applied for universities in Colombia, I found many universities with mechanical engineering programs but they were very expensive tuition. At that time my family didn´t have enough resources to cover that intuition, so I had to apply to a public university. After two years the economy in my country improved and I was able to apply to a better university in order to continue my career.
